As Misha and Jerry cut into their gender reveal cake, they expected pink or blue but found black instead. The room fell silent, everyone confused. Misha’s heart sank as she glanced at Jerry, who looked equally baffled.
Nancy, Jerry’s mother, stood off to the side, dressed in black and wiping away tears. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “Years ago, a fortune teller told me if your first child was a boy, it would ruin the family and make me ill. I thought if the cake was black, it might stop the curse.”
Jerry stared in disbelief. “Mom, that’s ridiculous!” he exclaimed, frustration clear.
Then, Jerry’s cousin, Megan, spoke up, scrolling through her phone. “Aunt Nancy, that fortune teller was exposed as a fraud years ago. Look!” She showed the article to everyone.
Nancy gasped as she read the screen. “I can’t believe it… All this time, I’ve been scared for nothing.”
Tears rolled down Nancy’s face as guilt overwhelmed her. Misha, feeling the weight of the moment, stepped over and gently placed a hand on her shoulder. “It’s okay, Mom. We know now. Let’s put this behind us.”
Jerry sighed, shaking his head. “So… are we having a boy?” he asked with a half-smile.
Laughter erupted, breaking the tension. Nancy smiled through her tears, and everyone gathered to eat the black cake. Though it wasn’t the reveal they had planned, the joy and relief that filled the room made it a moment to remember.
