In a recent episode of Jeopardy!, a seemingly simple question regarding the Lord’s Prayer left all three contestants stumped, surprising many fans. Host Mayim Bialik read the $200 clue in the “Dadjectives” category: “Matthew 6:9 says, ‘Our Father Which Art In Heaven,’ This ‘Be Thy Name.’” The answer, “hallowed” (as in “What is hallowed”), is familiar to many who learned the prayer growing up.
Viewers reacted strongly on social media, with some expressing disbelief. “Not one contestant knew the answer… Are you waking up yet?” one Twitter user wrote. “The Lord’s Prayer was like knowing the Pledge of Allegiance,” another said, while others questioned the contestants’ religious backgrounds.
Despite some disappointment, others pointed out that Jeopardy! often asks Bible-related questions and that contestants are selected from diverse backgrounds. It’s possible these contestants hadn’t grown up with Christian traditions.
In the Final Jeopardy round, the answer—“He starred in the 2 films whose soundtracks were the top 2 bestselling albums of 1978”—elicited more success. The answer was John Travolta, and contestant Suresh Krishnan claimed his sixth victory.
