My husband’s 40th birthday was coming up, and I wanted to throw him a surprise party. To prepare, I told him I’d be out of town and we’d celebrate later. I stayed at my friend Karen’s house the night before the big day. The next day, I got up early to get everything ready. By 5:00 PM, Tom’s friends and family started arriving to help decorate.
At 5:45, we gathered in the kitchen, excitedly waiting for Tom. The door opened, and instead of Tom, a young couple walked in with suitcases. Shocked, I asked who they were. They explained they had rented the house on Airbnb. Realizing Tom must have listed the house when I told him I’d be out of town, I called him. Tom was surprised and apologized, saying he didn’t know about the party and wanted to make extra money.
The couple, Jake and Emily, offered to leave, but we invited them to stay. They hesitantly joined us, and when Tom arrived, he apologized to everyone. Despite the unexpected twist, the party continued, and Jake and Emily fit right in. We all toasted to unexpected guests and had a great time.
“Cheers to unexpected guests and surprise parties,” Dave toasted, raising his glass.
“Cheers!” we all echoed, clinking our glasses together.
As the night went on, I couldn’t help but smile. Despite the chaos, it turned out to be a night we would never forget. And as for the vacation, Tom and I would definitely be taking one, with a story to tell for years to come.
