I have two sons. James is kind, hardworking, and honest. Dan? Lazy, selfish, and charming just enough to get by.
When Dan married Lara, we were stunned. She was everything he wasn’t—sweet, loyal, loving. I hoped she’d change him.
But a few nights ago, I overheard Dan on the phone:
“Yes, babe… she’ll be at work, so we’ll do dinner and the hotel.”
He was cheating. On Lara.
So I picked her up from work and told her everything. Her face went pale, but she didn’t cry. “Let’s catch him in the act,” she said.
That night, we followed Dan to a fancy restaurant. He was there, laughing with a blonde named Jen. After dinner, they walked to a hotel nearby. Dan even posted a story: Privacy is everything, with the room number visible.
We waited. Then stormed in.
“Mom?!” Dan gasped, half-undressed, Jen on his lap. Lara calmly grabbed his phone and went live.
“Hey followers,” she said, “this is who Dan really is. A liar. A cheater.”
His world collapsed instantly. Sponsors dropped him. His online courses tanked. James cut him off.
Dan begged for forgiveness. But I looked him in the eyes and said, “I’m choosing what’s right over you.”
Lara and I sat at my kitchen table later.
“You didn’t have to help me,” she whispered.
“I love you like my own,” I replied.
Because sometimes, you lose a son… but gain a daughter.
And I’d choose her every single time.
