Nicky Weaver was a selfish girl, spoiled by her mother, Sophia. Sophia, who had been left crippled and disfigured by an accident, lavished love on her only child. Despite Sophia’s sacrifices, Nicky grew up demanding and hurtful, ashamed of her mother’s appearance.
In high school, Nicky refused to let Sophia attend any school events. “I’m the prettiest girl in school, and you don’t look like my mom,” she declared. Sophia, swallowing her pain, watched Nicky’s graduation from afar.
Years later, Nicky returned home after college and began dating George, her boss’s wealthy son. “This is it, Mom. George is my ticket to a better life,” Nicky said. When George proposed, Nicky dismissed her mother’s happiness and said she was marrying for status, not love.
When George wanted to meet Sophia, Nicky devised a plan. She instructed Sophia to cook dinner but to pretend to be the maid. Sophia, heartbroken, complied. That evening, Sophia was introduced as the maid and then dismissed. She spent the night at her friend Anne’s house, sharing her humiliation.
Anne, furious at Nicky’s behavior, decided to teach her a lesson. The next morning, Anne barged into Sophia’s apartment, claiming to be Nicky’s mother and loudly sharing unflattering truths. George, witnessing this, quietly left.
“You stupid woman!” Nicky screamed at Anne. “What have you done?”
Anne replied, “I saved that young man and showed you the truth. Your mother deserves better.”
Nicky, devastated and ashamed, sought forgiveness from her mother. It marked the beginning of her transformation. Though not always perfect, Nicky became a kinder, more loving daughter to Sophia.
