Kevin loved Halloween, but one house on his street, Mrs. Kimbly’s, stood dark and undecorated. Everyone else had decorated, and Kevin, puzzled, decided to offer help. He knocked on Mrs. Kimbly’s door, but she snapped at him, refusing his offer to decorate for free and slamming the door.
Determined, Kevin returned home and shared the story with his mom, Sarah, who suggested that Mrs. Kimbly might be going through something. Still, Kevin felt she was more lonely than angry.
He gathered decorations and returned to Mrs. Kimbly’s house, secretly decorating it. Just as he finished, Mrs. Kimbly stormed out, furious. She smashed Kevin’s favorite pumpkin, and he ran home heartbroken.
That night, in his vampire costume, Kevin couldn’t stop thinking about her. Worried kids might prank her undecorated house, he returned to give out his own candy, sitting quietly on her porch.
To his surprise, Mrs. Kimbly opened the door. She sat next to him and apologized, explaining that Halloween reminded her of her loneliness. Kevin suggested she didn’t have to be alone and invited her to join the fun.
With a soft smile, she thanked him, and together, they began to enjoy Halloween.
