Are My Mom and I Wrong for Lying to My Wife about What Was Happening with Our Baby?

Yesterday, my wife Julia called, excited to come home and see our 11-month-old son Ashton. My mom and I froze because we had been hiding something important from her.

Julia, a medical resident, has been swamped with work, leaving my mom and me to care for Ashton. Mom, old-fashioned and believing a mother should be with her baby, often questioned Julia’s absence. Despite our worries, Julia’s dedication to her career was something we both supported.

Recently, Ashton started speaking his first words and taking his first steps. Mom and I, wanting to spare Julia from feeling more guilt and stress, decided not to tell her. We thought we were protecting her, but it was a mistake.

Julia, arriving home, found out and was devastated. “How could you hide from me that our baby has started speaking his first words and walks so well?” she cried. We explained our intentions, but the pain of missing these milestones was too much for her.

In the end, Julia understood but was clear: “I don’t want to miss anything again.” We promised to keep her involved in every moment of Ashton’s life, ensuring she feels part of our son’s growth.

Despite the challenges, we’re committed to balancing our responsibilities and cherishing every milestone together as a family.
