‘She won’t let go of him’: Tennessee couple of 69 years hold hands in final moments

The enduring love story of an elderly Tennessee couple, Virginia and Tommy Stevens, who had been married for an incredible 69 years, touched the hearts of many as they spent their last moments together, holding each other’s hands.

Tommy had been battling Alzheimer’s disease and was receiving care at a memory care unit within the assisted living facility where the couple resided. Unfortunately, his health took a severe turn as he developed aspiration pneumonia and sepsis, leading to labored breathing and dangerously low blood pressure.

During the same period, Virginia, his beloved wife, suffered a fall, resulting in six broken ribs, a spinal fracture, and a hip injury. The medical situation was dire for both of them, leading to their transfer to Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC).

At VUMC, hospital staff recognized the profound bond between the couple and allowed them to be reunited in one room. The moment they laid eyes on each other, Virginia and Tommy “both lit up,” as recounted by their daughter, Karen Kreager. Although Tommy could only communicate in small whispers, he knew that Virginia was by his side, and they never let go of each other’s hands.

For Virginia, this reunion brought a sense of peace and comfort. She expressed, “You know, it helped me a lot. It just gave me peace that I wouldn’t have to worry about him. He was going to be with me.”

Throughout their 69-year marriage, the couple raised two children and welcomed grandchildren and one great-grandchild into their lives. Even in their final moments, they continued to hold hands, a testament to the enduring love they shared.

Virginia’s sense of humor shone through as she interacted with her visiting family, teasing her grandson and granddaughter and enjoying their company. Their time together allowed them to reminisce about their life, including vacations and holiday gatherings, creating precious memories in their final days.

Tommy passed away on September 8, while Virginia was released from the hospital but sadly succumbed to her injuries on September 17.

The story of Virginia and Tommy Stevens serves as a touching reminder of the power of love and the deep connections that endure even in the face of adversity. Their unwavering bond and the peaceful moments they found in each other’s presence inspire us to cherish our loved ones and hold their hands through life’s challenges.
