Here’s Why I Refused to Take Care of My Mother with Disability– Story of the Day

Growing up, my mother made it clear that my brother was her favorite, while I was raised by my grandparents due to her neglect. Despite financial assistance in her old age, I refused to take on caregiving responsibilities for her when she needed it most.

My brother, Stanley, called me after our mother broke her hip, seeking financial help. I obliged out of kindness, but when he demanded I provide round-the-clock care for her, I refused. I reminded him of the abandonment I faced as a child and the love my grandparents provided instead.

Despite his protests and attempts to guilt-trip me, I stood firm in my decision. I blocked his attempts to contact me and ignored the criticism from him and my mother. I refused to be manipulated into caring for someone who had neglected and mistreated me throughout my life.

While others may judge my decision, I remained steadfast in prioritizing my own well-being and that of my immediate family over familial obligations that were never reciprocated.
