Dan Haggerty, Who Played Grizzly Adams

Dan Haggerty, renowned for his portrayal of a gentle mountain man named Grizzly Adams alongside his trusty bear, Ben, passed away at the age of 73 in Burbank, Calif. The cause of death was attributed to cancer of the spine, as confirmed by his friend and manager, Terry Bomar.

Haggerty’s journey to fame began when a producer, impressed by his presence as a stuntman and animal handler, offered him a role in a film reshoot. This film, based on the novel “The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams,” propelled Haggerty into the spotlight, portraying a man falsely accused of murder who finds solace in the wilderness, forming a deep bond with nature and an orphaned bear.

The success of the film led to the creation of an NBC television series, where Haggerty reprised his iconic role. The show garnered immense popularity, earning him a People’s Choice Award in 1978 for the most popular actor in a new series.

Born on November 19, 1942, in Los Angeles, Haggerty’s life was marked by challenges, including a troubled childhood and personal losses. Despite setbacks, he found success in Hollywood, appearing in various films and television shows, often portraying characters with a connection to the outdoors.

Beyond his acting career, Haggerty’s love for animals extended to his personal life, where he lived on a ranch in Malibu Canyon with rescued and tamed wildlife. His talents as an animal trainer and stuntman earned him roles in iconic TV series like “Tarzan” and “Daktari.”

While his career saw ups and downs, Haggerty remained a beloved figure, cherished for his portrayal of Grizzly Adams and his contributions to the entertainment industry. His passing marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, compassion, and a deep appreciation for nature.
