Ben reluctantly moves to his grandfather’s house, leaving behind childhood friends. While exploring the forest, he rescues a trapped puppy from an abandoned well but falls in himself. Discovering a hidden tunnel, he stumbles upon a bunker containing his grandfather’s war-time secrets. Trapped, Ben reads the journal, finding resilience in his grandfather’s escape from a POW camp.
After several days in the bunker, with dwindling resources, Ben attempts escape but falls, injuring himself. As he contemplates survival, Buddy, the puppy, becomes a symbol of companionship. Unconscious, Ben is rescued by his parents who tracked his shovel to the well. Reunited with Buddy, Ben gains a loyal friend in the new town, symbolizing hope and friendship.
