Karen’s life had been a struggle since her husband left. She’d worked tirelessly, saving every penny until someone broke in and stole her life savings. Just a week later, she was shocked to see her son Jake driving a shiny red sports car.
“Where did you get that?” she demanded.
“New job,” he shrugged, but Karen felt a pit of suspicion. “You’ve never held a job in your life, Jake!”
He insisted it was legitimate, but her heart sank as the terrible thought crept in: “You didn’t take my money, did you?”
Furious, Jake stormed out. Desperate for answers, Karen followed him to a high-end salon where she saw him with an older woman, Lydia, who kissed him warmly. The sight twisted her stomach.
When Jake saw her, his face paled. “Mom?”
“Jake, what’s going on?”
“Lydia’s my girlfriend,” he said, avoiding her gaze.
Karen felt betrayed. “Is this why you’re driving a sports car? Are you using her?”
Jake’s hurt was palpable. “I love her. She’s helped me with my art—my first exhibition is in two days. I sold enough to pay off your debts.”
Stunned, Karen realized he hadn’t lied.
At the gallery, Jake took the stage. “This night means everything to me. But none of this would’ve happened without my mom.”
He held up the car keys. “This is for you, Mom.”
Tears filled Karen’s eyes as the room erupted in applause. Finally, they would be okay.
