After Brendan and I decided to split, he changed overnight. The once caring man I knew turned bitter and spiteful. To clear my head, I spent a weekend at my parents’ house, but when I returned, I found all my belongings scattered across the lawn. A large sign reading “Free Stuff!” stood proudly over my things.
Shocked and furious, I immediately called Brendan. He was smug, claiming I deserved it because he overheard me talking about taking half of everything in the divorce. “Now you know how it feels to lose what’s yours,” he said.
As I gathered my things, I kicked over an old bedside table. Inside the drawer, I discovered something priceless—Brendan’s father’s watch, a cherished family heirloom passed down for generations. Brendan must’ve forgotten it in the chaos.
A smirk crossed my face. It was time for payback.
Later, Brendan called, asking for the watch. I pretended a neighbor had taken it. “You’ll have to buy it back,” I teased. Desperate, he offered $500, knowing how priceless it was. I made him believe I’d negotiate with the neighbor.
The next morning, Brendan showed up with an envelope of cash. After handing over the money, he retrieved the watch, none the wiser that it had been with me all along. As he left, he mentioned the divorce proceedings.
I just smiled, knowing I had my small victory. Sometimes, revenge comes in unexpected forms.
